Royal Oak Passage

Posted by Picasa

On the right is The Royal Oak pub, the oldest pub in Winchester and supposedly the oldest licensed bar in England. First used to brew beer over 1000 years ago, a pub has stood on this site since 1390. The present day pub was built in 1630 and it became known as the Royal Oak during the English Civil War. On the left is God Begot House.

  1. It is hard to wrap my mind around places back in time that can be looked upon today after so many century's. Thanks for sharing.
My brother just did DNA testing for genealogy and our people came from the U.K. to the U.S.A.

  2. I know, some of the buildings are so old, I often think surely this must be a replica of the original, maybe built 200 years ago ... but no, they're the real thing!

  4. Several pubs in England claim to be the oldest, there is one the Bingley Arms at Bardsey. One thing I do know our public houses are closing at a rate of around 29 each week. This figure has jumped since I last looked at this and I know that several pubs I have photographed over the last two years have closed.

  5. We haven't had too many pubs close in Winchester recently, but over the years the number has gone down from 132 to 45, and 10 breweries to none today
